01 / DESIGN
What was studied?
A multicenter randomized study assigned 361 patients with severe sepsis to conventional care with or without thymosin alpha 1. It examined 28-day mortality and changes in an immune marker, monocyte HLA-DR.
02 / FINDINGS
What did the researchers report?
Mortality was numerically lower in the active group, but the nonstratified comparison did not meet the conventional significance threshold and the relative-risk confidence interval crossed one. Some immune-marker changes favored treatment.
03 / LIMITS
How should it be interpreted?
The borderline mortality analyses and single-blind design call for caution. Changes in an immune marker are not substitutes for patient outcomes. This early signal should be read alongside the larger, neutral TESTS trial rather than presented as definitive evidence.
