01 / DESIGN
What was studied?
Male Wistar rats were studied shortly after Semax exposure. Researchers used real-time PCR to examine nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene expression in different parts of the brain.
02 / FINDINGS
What did the researchers report?
Expression of both genes increased in the hippocampus. BDNF-related expression also increased in other examined regions, while NGF-related expression decreased in the frontal cortex. The response was region-specific rather than a uniform increase.
03 / LIMITS
How should it be interpreted?
A short-term messenger-RNA response does not demonstrate improved memory, mood or neuroprotection. These were animal measurements, not a clinical trial. The mixed regional pattern cautions against reducing the findings to a general claim that Semax increases all neurotrophins.
