STEP 9: semaglutide, knee pain and the role of weight change

A trial in people with obesity and knee osteoarthritis measured both weight and pain.

Clinical trialPaper year: 2024Semaglutide

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

This 68-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 407 participants with obesity and symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Both groups received lifestyle counseling. The main endpoints included body-weight change and a standardized pain score.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The semaglutide group had greater reductions in body weight and knee-osteoarthritis pain than the placebo group. Physical function was also assessed. The trial therefore examined a specific clinical context beyond body weight alone.

03 / LIMITS

How should it be interpreted?

The result does not establish direct cartilage regeneration or benefit for every type of joint pain. Weight change and other pathways can contribute to symptoms. Study formulations, eligibility and follow-up cannot be transferred to research-supply products or personal-use guidance.
