01 / DESIGN
What was studied?
Twelve participants with Barth syndrome entered a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. Walking distance and a symptom scale were primary endpoints. A subset continued into an open-label extension after the randomized comparison.
02 / FINDINGS
What did the researchers report?
Neither primary endpoint was met during the randomized portion. Improvements in walking distance and symptom scores were reported during the later open-label period, which had fewer participants and no concurrent blinded placebo comparison.
03 / LIMITS
How should it be interpreted?
Findings from these two phases should not be combined as if they carried the same causal certainty. Rare-disease sample size, crossover design and attrition matter. The study concerns a defined pharmaceutical product and disease population, not general energy-enhancement claims for research materials.
